Towing Capacity Rating for Flat Towing Versus Trailer Towing with 2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500
Question:
If I buy a hitch for a 2018 Mercedes Sprinter 2500 with a 5,000 lbs capacity, does this mean the most weight I can flat tow is 5,000? How does this relate to the 7,000 lbs Weight Distribution Towing Capacity?can I flat tow more weight if the Sprinter can hangout?

Expert Reply:
If your 2018 Mercedes-Benz towing capacity is 5,000 lbs, then the most weight you can flat tow is that 5,000 lbs maximum. The rating for weight distribution systems will not be valid for flat towing a vehicle.
You may want to check your owners manual and driver's door jamb to help with towing capacities as some vehicles are rated higher at up to 7,500 lbs and you may simply need to upgrade your trailer hitch.
For instance we have many hitches rated for 6,000 lbs towing without a weight distribution system like # 75549 if your vehicle is rated for that high a capacity. I've linked the page to your options to assist.
