Hello Chris. For your 2012 Ford Escape I recommend the Curt Class 3 Hitch # 13650. This hitch has a 2" receiver which is standard and will give you a ton of options for a bike rack.

My personal favorite bike rack is the Kuat NV 2.0 # BA22B. This rack will work with the 2" hitch and it can carry 2 bike weighing up to 60 lbs apiece. So this will work with virtually any bike, even heavier e-bikes. It will also accommodate larger tires up to 5" wide. The Kuat racks are top quality, and it will look cool on the back of your car. I have linked a few install videos for you below which you may find useful.

700 dollars for a bike rack is a little insane. Any cheaper options?

@Jesse Oh I hear you. The Kuat racks are nice but they are expensive. There are a lot of great options that will cost a lot less. Knowing what kind of bikes you have will really help me make a good recommendation. If you have just standard road bikes or mountain bikes, take a look at the Hollywood Racks Destination Bike Rack # HLY94FR. This is a solid platform rack that can hold two bikes weighing up to 35 lbs apiece. It will accommodate tires up to 3" wide. Just a great all-around rack for a very competitive price. If this will not work for you, or if you have some type of specialty bikes just let me know what you have, and I am happy to look into it.
