Troubleshooting Slanted Equalizer on Unloaded 7K Cargo Trailer

Question:

I have a tandem axle trailer that the rear part of the equalizer/shackle is very close to the bottom of the trailer. It even contacts it from time to time when loaded. I have attached pictures of it, with trailer sitting level and unloaded. Also attached picture of the axles. You can also tell where the rear axle has been hitting the bottom of the trailer. I have installed shorter shackles which has helped some. Do I need to change to a shorter equalizer as well? Isnt the equalizer supposed to sit fairly level? 7000lb trailer that I normally carry about 4-5000lbs on.

From the photos and dimensions it looks like you have the suspension kit that's equivalent to the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # APT5. For your axle and hanger spacing you need lead springs that are more in the 25-1/8" to 25-1/8" range. Leaf springs will elongate over time and if you took the center eye measurements with the weight of the trailer down then both of those will contribute towards the longer spring measurement, but from my end of things it looks like your leaf springs are too long and that's what's causing your problem.

For your application I recommend going with the 3,500 lb 4-Leaf spring that measures 25-1/8" which comes in the following finishes:

- Powder Coat # e54SR (standard)
- Dacromet Coat # e68SR (Upgrade)
