Replacement Shelby 5438 Winch Recommendation for Pop Up Camper

Question:

I see your answer to the same question was using the part number # DL14934 But my question is my Shelby 5438 Lift System that is broken and this is a 4 cable system with the part recommendation could you attach the 4 cables to the one winch? Expert Reply: I do have a winch replacement option for you, but unfortunately there is no direct replacement for your older Shelby 5438 winch in your pop up camper. I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake - TUFFPLATE Finish - 1,200 lbs # DL14934

The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake # DL14934 will work as an excellent replacement for your Shelby 5438 lift system with the 4 cables. We've had a number of people who've used this in the exact same situation as you and it's worked out well!

Attached is a review video for you to check out. If you're needing to replace your cable as well you can do so with part # DL24045.

Where is the video? I need to replace a Shelby 5438 and would like to see to do use the recommended winch with a 4 cable system.

@TinaL The review video is posted a little lower on this answer page, but I'm linking it to this comment as well. The video doesn't show the winch installed in the manner you're wanting, but it's more of an overview of the winch so you can get a general idea of what you're purchasing.

@JonG I have the same Shelby 5438 winch that needs replaced on a 1998 Starcraft Popup. This winch is located underneath and in the middle rear of the camper. There is a roughly 3' extension bar that protrudes out of the passenger side frame of the camper and that is where the hand crank attaches. Your recommendation is the Dutton-Lainson Winch DL14934 but can the existing 3' extension attach to the DL14934 or is there another part needed?

@Jj I haven't done the swap myself so I don't know those details, but the part # DL70311 is a replacement handle if you want to check out the photos we have on that page to compare that to what you have.
