Weight Distribution for Trailer With Side Mounted Trailer Jack

Question:

I have a 23 foot off road travel trailer with a jockey wheel. My tow vehicle is a 2019 Ram 1500 5.7 l hemi and since the max weight of the trailer is 6,600 lbs I need a weight distribution hitch with sway control according to the manufacture. Problem is the jockey wheel is in the way. What can you recommend.

It may be possible to use a WDH like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET with your trailer, but it will depend on the location of that jockey wheel. The brackets for this system mount 27-32" back from the center of the coupler with the overall length of the spring bars being 36". If your jack is clear or can be moved so it is out of the way then you could use this system or others like it.

The other possibility is to mount that jack on the inside of the frame if it will fit. This would get it out of the way and allow you to install a WDH as long as it isn't attached where the brackets need to go.

More than likely the only option you will have is to replace the jack with an A-frame jack. If you want to keep a jack that has a wheel you could use the A-Frame Trailer Jack with Caster Wheel - Sidewind - 15" Travel - 1,000 lbs # DL74MR. Any A-frame jack will let you use weight distribution without a problem.

The Equal-i-zer # EQ37100ET would be a great option assuming your tongue weight is 600-1,000 lbs. When choosing a WDH tongue weight is the most important factor. Your tongue weight is typically going to be 10-15% of your loaded trailer weight. I used the 6,600 lbs to come up with this system but you may fall below the 600 lb mark depending on the trailer and what you put in it.

If that is the case, consider the Fastway e2 # FA92-00-0800. This has a tongue weight range of 400-800 lbs so it would do a great job on the lower end. Equal-i-zer and Fastway are made by the same company and are both quality options.

I have attached some review videos for your reference.
