What Is the Maximum Temperature a Tire Should Get to?

Question:

What is the highest temperature that this Westlake tire can operate safely on the highway on a really hot day. These tires are on my Grand Design Travel Trailer? I would like to set-up my tire monitoring to alert me when the temperature of this tire gets too hot! Do you know? Thank you so much

Typical tires experience a temperature increase of roughly 50 degrees after running on the highway for half an hour. If it's a 70 degree day, the tire temperature should be about 120 degrees. That being said, tires should not get up to or over 195 degrees. This will affect the life of the tire and could potentially cause a blowout over time. So with that being said, I would set the sensor to 170 degrees at the maximum.

We have Goodyear Endurance ST225/75R25 -80 psi cold temp., tires on a 2023 cougar Keystone. We just purchased a Lippert Tire LINC.I’m confused on what max temp to set tires on and max temp change. We live in NC and it’s hot here in summer, 90’s. Also, what should the min psi and max psi be set for if cold setting is 80 psi? Thanks in advance!!

@Pamr I have actually asked Goodyear about this in the past and they said 100 to 110 degrees is a normal running temperature in the summer. Due to too many variables, they couldn't give me a definitive maximum, but anything over 170 degrees is getting into the danger zone and should be monitored. If it's getting close to 200 degrees, stop as soon as safely possible and let them cool down. You will want to check and make sure you aren't overloading the tires and they are inflated properly (when cooled down). As to the minimum and maximum PSI, we typically say to fill cold tires to the max PSI listed as that is how the manufacturer tests them. However, Goodyear does more than others and lists different capacities for different PSI loads on you 225/75R15, which I have listed below (each weight listed is per tire). 25 PSI - 1,430 pounds 30 PSI - 1,600 pounds 35 PSI - 1,760 pounds 40 PSI - 1,880 pounds 45 PSI - 2,020 pounds 50 PSI - 2,150 pounds 55 PSI - 2,270 pounds 60 PSI - 2,380 pounds 65 PSI - 2,540 pounds 70 PSI - 2,620 pounds 75 PSI - 2,720 pounds 80 PSI - 2,830 pounds Lastly, depending on what PSI you go with will determine what the maximum hot PSI should be set to. The rule is generally 25% of your max cold PSI will be what you want to set to max hot PSI to on your tire pressure monitoring system.
