Can the Thule Hullavator be Used with a Factory Roof Rack

Question:

We have a 2019 Toyota Highlander. We had Toyota install a Toyota roof rack after we purchased it. Now wed like to purchase 2 Thule Hullavator kayak racks. Our kayaks are 10foot Pelicans and weigh 39 pounds each. Is there a way to install these to our existing rack? Can our Toyota accommodate 2 Thule Hullavator racks?

The Thule Hullavator, part # TH898, requires an extension of the crossbars past the feet of 4" to 8". This is the reason it can't be used with most factory roof racks, including your 2019 Toyota Highlander's.

Instead, I recommend using the Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier and TelosXL Load Assist, part # MPG114MD-351XL. The carrier is compatible with factory crossbars, and the load assist doesn't require an extension. I've linked to a video review of this below.

The carrier measures 17" long. So, if you want to use two of them, you'll need to measure your crossbars to ensure you have the space to do so. Also, you'll need to consult your owner's manual to ensure they can handle the weight of two kayaks plus the weight of two carriers (24.4 pounds).

You don't need to buy the full kit for the second one since you will only need one load assist. For just the carrier, you can get part # MPG114MD.
