Can Bolt Cutters Cut the Locking Pin on the Tow Ready Trailer Coupler Lock
Question:
Can bolt cutters cut or actually snap the locking pin?

Expert Reply:
A set of heavy-duty bolt cutters may be able to break the locking pin on the Trailer Coupler Lock. The locking pin for this coupler lock is 1/2 inch in diameter and is made of 1407 steel. There are heavy duty bolt cutters that are available at hardware stores that have the ability to cut up to 1/2 inch or 9/16 inch diameter objects.
Another coupler lock that you may be interested in is the Fastway Coupler Lock, # FA86-0015-318. This lock uses a 5/8 inch diameter locking pin. Although there are some bolt cutters that may be able to cut a 5/8 inch pin, they are not a common tool someone would have laying around.
The purpose of coupler locks is to be a theft deterrent. With enough time, a determined thief will get what they are after. The key to theft deterrent is to make it so difficult on the thief to steal your trailer that they move on to an easier target.
Another type of lock that you may want to add is a wheel lock like the Rackem Lockem Magnum Wheel Lock, # RA-25. It may be tedious to remove multiple locks to use your trailer, but if you are parked in a high crime area, then removing multiple locks may be better than losing your trailer.
