Can 2009 Toyota Tacoma Safely Tow 4,200 Pound Trailer Long Distances
Question:
I have a 2009 extended cab sr5 4 x 4 longbed. Its rated at 6500 towing. I find that extreme. I want to tow a 24 to 26 foot travel trailor bumper pull rated at 4200 lbs. and 550 to 600 tongue weight. Is this excessive for long trips across america? I dont want to distroy my drivetrain. Please explain this to me so i know what to do. thanks!

If the owner's manual for your 2009 Toyota Tacoma lists a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds then it's safe to tow up to this limit, however as you probably realize, the closer you creep up to this limit the more you're really going to feel the truck work. For example, I can probably run a couple miles without stopping but it's not going to be pretty. Over time this kind of stress can lead to premature wear on various truck components.
Now with all of that being said a 4,500 pound trailer is well below your Tacoma's capacity, so I really don't foresee these kinds of issues, even for longer trips like what you mentioned. The truck is built to handle this and handle it well.
One thing I do recommend adding (even if you planned on towing a lighter trailer) is a supplemental transmission cooler. This is extremely beneficial for extending the lifespan of the truck's transmission and improving its overall performance while towing. If you have the 4.0L V6 engine I really like the Derale Series 9000 # D13614, which features 1-1/4" wide turbulator plates for really efficient cooling.
I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
