The heating element on your Atwood model GC10A-4E water heater (our part # AT94022) should be on the backside of the unit, towards the bottom of the tank. It will actually be behind the gas line assembly, which will need to be loosened and moved out of the way to gain access to the existing element so it can be removed or replaced.

I have attached an image to assist. If you need a replacement heating element you can use the Camco # CAM02143.

Does the wh have to be removed to get to element? Lots of gas and water lines to remove if that's the case.

The phot you included is of the front of the Atwood GC10A-4E not the rear where the heating element is located. Your arrow is pointing between the tank drain plug and the gas valve that are on the front of the unit. The heating element is on the back near the bottom with a plastic cover over it. The 120V power wire should be feeding into the cover as well as a 12V control wire that controls the power relay switch. Turning the electric water heater switch inside the rig off does not actually turn off the 120V power. It just de-energizes the power at the relay that is inside the heating element cover. Turn off power at the breaker or be careful of the wiring inside the cover.
