Moving A Trailer Without Tires For Winter Storage
Question:
Yes, this is a serious question: similar to the question above, I need to move my 34foot dual axle camper about 40foot into a pole barn for winter storage. I need to remove about 3-5inch in height. I am looking at smaller wheels/tires with hub adapters but the 12inch drums will likely be the constraint for 12inch wheels looks like 13inch will fit with 6-bolt to 5-bolt adapters, but may not get me low enough. I am considering just buying 4 bare rims and just using them without tires to roll it in/out. Each wheel is carrying about 1700 lbs. Moving on hard pack gravel so not worried about damage to concrete or asphalt. 2 concerns - sideloading on bearings without tire compliance pretty much straight back, no turning, perhaps bending rim edges under weight? Feedback?

If you move a trailer that large on the bare rims, it will most definitely bend the rims and possibly damage the bearings. I will be surprised if the trailer moves honestly. You may be able to lose 3-5 inches in height by putting on smaller tires however you would need to find a matching hub that fits your spindle. If you do not go too much smaller then your existing wheels and tires then is it most likely possible to find a hub that fits your spindle and will lower the trailer down a couple inches but 3-5 inches is not likely.
Another option is to cover the trailer with a cover instead of putting it in the barn for winter storage. I recommend Camco UltraGuard 5th Wheel Cover # CAM45756 that fits between 34 feet and 36 feet fifth wheels. The cover is made from a UV-resistant and water-resistant material for maximum element protection.
