If you wanted to use the Gorilla-Lift Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist part # GL1 on your utility trailer with tall sides you would need to have a rail that is 12" to 24" from trailer floor. It does not look like there is one from the photo you attached but I could be wrong. That said, if you do not have this rail then you could install one of your own but that would be the only way for you to use the lift assist. The height of your tailgate will not be an issue.

I have attached a photo of a similar gate assist (part # RA-27C) on a trailer with tall sides as a reference.

Can a tailgate lift assist be used on a horse trailer ramp, if mounted to the outside of the trailer, along the side wall? I have a ramp-style trailer and the ramp itself weighs close to 100lbs. It's dead weight from the ground up, and hard for me to manage. I'm looking for a way to make lifting easier and quicker.

For an enclosed unit like your horse trailer the best option is a self-winding spring like the Raynor # 362SW61, which will install at the top of the rear opening. The Gorilla-Lift system really only works well with open utility trailers.
