Towing Capacity and Parts Needed to Pull Trailer with 2005 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner
Question:
My Tacoma GVWR Is 5350lbs I’m not sure what the payload is but I’m looking to either pull a light weight camper trailer or carry a light weight slide in camper. What are my limitations? 2005 Tacoma pre runner V6 it didn’t come with a hitch receiver?

I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2005 Toyota Tacoma and it lists a maximum trailer weight of 3,500 pounds if the truck didn't come equipped with the towing package and 6,500 pounds if it does have the towing package. This represents the heaviest camper trailer that your truck can pull.
The manual also lists a payload capacity for the Pre-Runner of 1,268 pounds if you have steel wheels or 1,299 pounds if you have aluminum wheels. The payload capacity represents the total amount of weight you can add to the vehicle including occupants, cargo, etc and is the number you would use to select a compatible slide-in camper.
I do recommend verifying this information in your copy of the manual or by checking with a local Toyota dealer.
If you decide to pull a camper trailer you will need a trailer hitch, wiring harness, and a ball mount/hitch ball combo. For the hitch I recommend the etrailer.com Class III # E98850 that will use existing holes in the truck's frame for a no-drill installation and is made right here in the USA. I also really like its unique matte black finish that provides a rugged look and prevents any scratches or scuffs.
Then for a trailer wiring harness I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118469 that will plug right into factory ports behind the driver and passenger side tail lights. This will provide you with a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights.
I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the best ball mount for your setup to ensure the trailer rides level along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
