Reverse Light PIn on a 7-Way Trailer Connector

Question:

I have a 2018 Ram2500 I wanted to use a removable auxiliary reverse light for plowing that I would mount on the trailer receiver. Is there a pole on the plug that would turn the light on when truck is in reverse.

The reverse light pin on a traditional 7-way trailer connector, like part # PK11893 or a factory connector if that's what you have on your 2018 Ram, is the center pin. Take a look at the picture I attached that shows all the pin functions.

To add a light that runs off your truck's reverse light circuit you can tap into the trailer wiring going into the center pin on the connector or directly into the reverse lights on the back of the truck. Either will work for you.

@SteveS Steve, you'd need to use a circuit tester # PTW2993 and test the wires for function in order to determine which one is the reverse light.

Doesn’t seem to work with my two wire Aux light (red and black wires on the light) as indicated on your reply.

@Dave How is your light wire into the 7-way? I'm going to need to know more about your setup in order to figure out the problem.

@KevinC Hi Kevin, thank you for your reply. I am trying to use a standard 7 pin blank adapter to plug for an auxiliary mounted light to the back of my truck. I know I can tap into the trucks back up wiring, but I wanted to have a temporary reverse light for backing into dark camping spots. As I understand your response to a previous guest, the center pin is the reverse light function, and the black wire around the perimeter is for power. I tried reversing my red and black from the center pin to the black along the perimeter and was unable to get the reverse light to work. Do you have some ideas for me, please?

@Dave Ok, what's happening is you're putting two different power sources to the light instead of a power and ground. If you wired to the ground and the reverse light pins the light would work whenever you put the vehicle in reverse.
