Finding a Hub for a Very Old Trailer with 6 Lug Bolt Pattern # 1779 inner and # 2788 Outer Bearings
Question:
I have an old trailer from a long time ago. It is a 6 lug hub with a step axle, meaning the small bearing is 1 inch I.D. bearing #1779 and the inside bearing is 1-1/2 inch bearing #2788 I.D. It looks like the measurement center to center across the hub is 5-5/8. Do you have anything like this or can you recommend something else? It would be real nice to find something more standard. Thanks.

I did some research and found that the 2,600 lb Hub, # 22834, takes the # 1779 outer bearing and # 2788 inner bearing and would use the # 29031 grease seal. This hub has a 6 bolt on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern. This sounds like the hub you have, and replacement parts are available. Along with the parts mentioned above you may need grease caps, # RG04-060, and races, # 1729 and # 2729, to complete parts needed to repair one of your existing hubs.
When doing my research I found that no other hubs take the # 1779, .093 inch inner diameter, and # 2788, 1.50 inch inner diameter, bearings, and that the 22834 hubs are considered obsolete and are no longer produced. This means that if your hubs are damaged and cannot be repaired with the parts mentioned above it would be time to consider a new axle for your old trailer. This would give you the opportunity to order a more standard bolt pattern like 5 on 4-1/2 inches.
If you order a new axle, you will need to know the axle capacity you need, the wheel bolt pattern for the wheels you will be using and and whether a drop or straight axle is needed. Spring centers and hub face dimensions will also be needed.
