Torque Specs for Axle Spindle Nut and Lug Nuts
Question:
What is the torque specs on the lug nuts and axle nut for the 84545BX
asked by: Jared W
Expert Reply:
There is not a torque spec on the axle nut for the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 3,500-lb Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 # 84545BX. The axle will have a castle nut that should be tightened until there is no side to side play and then backed off to the next notch in the castle nut for the cotter pin to retain the nut. If you click on the video link I provided for replacing hubs and fast forward to the 4:45 minute mark you can see the procedure. If you have an EZ lube spindle, then the spindle nut will be torqued to 50 lbs and then slightly backed off and tightened by hand so there is not an official torque spec.
For the lug nuts, the 1/2 inch coned nuts will be torqued between 75 and 85 foot lbs each on wheels that are between 8 and 14 inches. If you have 15 or 16 inch aluminum wheels the torque spec is 90-100 ft lbs. If you have 15 or 16 inch steel wheels the spec is 90-120 ft lbs.
If you do not have a torque wrench, I recommend # ALL944001 or adapter # ALL940962.
