Will Air Bags Level 2018 Ram 2500 When Towing

Question:

2018 ram 2500. Towing a prime time 35 camper. I am 70 years old the hitch wt. is around 900lbs. to old to work weight distribution system . Will a air system level me without using the distribution system. looking at firestone 5000 set.

The Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2598 that fit your 2018 Ram 2500 will not keep your truck level when you are towing. They are definitely helpful in terms of improving your overall ride and stability but just are not a substitute for a weight distribution system.

The reason for this is the tongue weight is not going to be re-distributed when only using air bags; a weight distribution system is the only option which is going to actively transfer that load and thus ensure you have a level ride. A weight distribution system such as the Reese Steadi-Flex # RP66560 uses brackets instead of lift chains so it is easier to set up, the head unit is easier to tilt because it has pre-set positions instead of needing to piling on washers, and it has a lift handle included.

The use of an electric jack such as the Stromberg Carlson A-Frame Jack # JET-5000 will also make it easier to use a weight distribution system.

The Reese Steadi-Flex # RP66560 will work for total tongue weights (the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your '18 Ram 2500) between 600 lbs - 1,200 lbs, with the ideal weight being somewhere in the middle, such as the 900 lb weight you mentioned.
