There are a two schools of thought regarding trailer wiring color coding, which is why we recommend wiring by function, not color.
The company that supplies us with molded trailer connectors like part # H20046 use the following color code:
Red = Left Turn/ Brake
Brown = Right Turn/ Brake
Green = Running/ Marker Lights
Blue = Brake Output Voltage
Black = 12-V for Trailer Accessories
Yellow = Auxiliary
The following color code is also very common:
Green = Right Turn/ Brake
Yellow = Left Turn/ Brake
Brown = Running/ Marker Lights
Blue = Brake Output Voltage
White = Ground
Black or Red = 12-V Accessory
Purple = Auxiliary or Reverse Lights
The important thing to consider is that the trailer connector is wired so that the correct circuits match the way the trailer connector on the vehicle is wired.
You can use a 12 V car battery and apply power to each circuit on your trailer connector to determine which wire provides power for what function. Once you determine which circuit controls which function, you can wire the 7-way plug accordingly.
