Can a P235/75-R15 Tire Be Used on a Horse Trailer

Question:

I have a used huge TB/draft height 2-horse trailer No manufacturer plate found yet to state originals... somewhere in time a previous owner put on P 235/75r15 M/S tires wheels 5 on 4 1/2, 3 rims match... for safety, etc, of my 4 legged farmily, and us, what tires should be on? Ive had ppl recommend pre-rimmed deals through TSC, but Im wanting better guidance of pros. I know Carlisle, Towmaster, and Milestar are often most recommended but no one is helping w what size. Tuffy is a heavy trailer, but pulled like a breeze from point of sale and to welder empty. Next hope, repaint and loaded.

I do have a way for you to make sure you have the correct tires on your horse trailer but unfortunately, trailer manufacturers do not grant access to this information without the VIN. If the trailer manufacturer is no longer in business then the only other option would be to look for the information sticker.

In regards to size, as long as you have the proper clearance which is 4" between the top of the tire and bottom of the fender and 1" between the side of the tire and frame, then the size will be sufficient for you. You will also need to make sure the gross trailer weight (GTW) is within the load range capacity of the tires.

With that being said, the tires you have on your trailer may have the correct size and load range for your trailer but they are not the correct type. The "P" in P235/75-R15 stands for passenger. Passenger tires are not designed to be used on trailers as they do not have a strong enough sidewall. Instead, you will want to switch to a set of ST225/75-R15. The "ST" stands for special trailer and will have the sidewall thickness needed for your horse trailer.

For replacement, I recommend using the Karrier Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10256 which has a radial construction and load range D (2,540 lbs) rating. This is our premier tire manufacture and they offer a 2-year warranty on all tires. If you would like to replace both the wheels and tires then I recommend the Karrier Radial Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel part # AM32545 which comes with the same tire listed above.

A 225/75-15 tire will be .6" smaller in diameter and .4" smaller in width than a 235/75-15 tire so you should not have any fitment issues with this new size. I have attached a review video of the tire and tire/wheel combo for you as well.
