How Much Weight Can A 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel Tow
Question:
Hello, Im considering the eco diesel Grand Cherokee because of its 7200 lbs tow capacity. The trailer Im considering has a GVWR of 6,400 lbs and is 29 foot long. Considering the Cherokees GVW of 6,800lbs, along with its 110inch wheel base, is this trailer too big? The tongue weight on the trailer is 510 lbs, and the Cherokee is rated for 710 lbs, so Im thinking were good there. Thanks for the advice!

To determine the maximum trailer weight you can tow with your Jeep, you will need to find both the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) and the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW). These figures can all be found on the information tag located inside the driver door jamb. If you subtract the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of the vehicle from the (GCWR) that will give you the maximum Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) you can safely tow. As long as this figure exceeds the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of your trailer which is the most it can weigh, you will be able to tow it.
If the GTW of your trailer is more than 50% of your GVWR, the use of a weight distribution system is recommended. In order to choose the correct weight distribution system, you will need to find the total tongue weight (TTW) of your towing setup by adding the tongue weight (TW) of both your loaded ready to tow trailer and any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
An easy way to find this would involve using a tongue weight scale like the Trailer Tongue Weight Scale part # e99044. When choosing a weight distribution system, you will want your TTW to fall in the middle of the weight distributions weight capacity. For example, the ideal weight distribution system for a total tongue weight of 600 lbs. is one that is rated for 400-800 lbs. of tongue weight.
For a TTW between 400 and 800 lbs, I recommend using the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control part # RP66083. The Strait-Line is one of the most advanced weight distribution systems on the market. It comes with a lifetime warranty and will do an excellent job of both preventing trailer sway and helping to distribute the tongue weight of your trailer. I have attached a review video of this system for you as well.
