Difference Between Trailer Tire Sizes ST205/75R15 and ST225/75R15

What are the key differences in these two tire sizes ST205/75R15 vs ST225/75R15 and do they require different wheels. Thanks

The two sizes you mentioned are pretty similar and fit many of the same 15 inch wheels. The 205/75-15 fits rim widths of 5 inch to 6-1/2 inch whereas the 225/75-15 fits widths that are 5 inch to 6 inch.

The 205 is 27.1 inches tall and the 225 is 28.4 inches tall. The 225 has higher capacities available for it as well.

Generally people go to the bigger size when they need more capacity than what the 205 offers. In that size the part # LHWL304 is our best option as it has a 75 mph speed rating and a 2 year road assistance program. It's weight capacity is 2,830 lbs at 80 psi.

What is the difference between a D15 and a R15 tire??Both are ST205 but one is R15 and the other is D15 is it safe to run one on one side and one on the other. Please help!!

The "D" that you see indicates a bias ply tire (the D is for directional ply) and the "R" is used on radial ply tires. Unless the majority of your towing takes place off-road or on bumpy terrain, radial tires are the way to go. They perform much better on the highway and tend to run a bit cooler. I don't recommend using one of each on an axle, as it will likely lead to uneven tread wear and a shortened lifespan on the tire(s).

@ChrisR The trailer is a duel axle car hauler. As of now, I have the two D's on the passenger side and the two R's on the drivers side. Since I was sold the tire and didn't know then it's on me. Do you recommend I not use the D's and just buy two more R's and trash the two D's?

@NazL I would definitely replace the D (bias play) tires with R (radial) units as soon as you can. It's just going to result in much better tread wear and lifespan on those tires. You could keep the bias tires around to use as spares - they would be fine to use in a pinch when needed.

@JamesonC What if the other way around? The tires on my 5th wheel are 225/75R/15 the ones I'm thinking about are 205/75R/15 Would that be ok?

The 2830 is that the additional weight with 4 tires? I have a 7000 lbs car trailer that I carry 4400 lbs tractor on. It carry it well but thinking I need to upgrade. Thank you

@Edwin That weight is per tire so you'd multiply that by 4 to get the overall tire weight capacity which would be 11,320 lb.
