Is 1/2 an Inch Too Much Play Between the Jaws and Pin When My 5th Wheel Hitch is Hooked Up

Question:

I have about 3/8 to 1/2 inch of play between the pin and the jaws.... You can feel when you start off or stop.....should this be of concern and could you supply part numbers for the jaw kit and springs.

What you are experiencing is chucking, that is the sound and feeling of the trailer moving around behind you. There is normally a little play between the jaws and the king pin, 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch is a normal amount of play. Unless you have a cushioned pin box you will experience what you are describing.

The part # for the Replacement Jaw Kit for Reese, Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitches is # 58056, the Replacement Spring has a part # 30776.

You could also install a 5th Airborne which will reduce longitudinal shock or chucking by almost 60 percent and vertical shock by 44 percent. If you know the make and model number of your pinbox, I will be able to find if there is a 5th Airborne replacement that will fit your fifth Wheel trailer. I have included a link to a 5th Airborne FAQ article that also has an application chart that shows what 5th Airborne is recommended for the different pin boxes.
