Replacement 7-Way Trailer Connector for a 2000 Dodge Ram 3500

Question:

I just bought this 2000 Dodge Ram 3500 With factory 7 pin connection. At least I think it is . The plug for the back connection for the trailer is missing, only wires are hanging. Someone installed flat bed and cut all wires but I believe there is 8 wires. Under the dash there was the pilot brake controller installed but they tapped in from factory harnes to new PILOT 80550 harness. They connected color to color. Will it need to be re done or is this fine also will it need a circuit brake and will I need to ground direct to battery? I know its allot of info at one and is probably confusing. But please let me know if I can explain better.

If the factory 7-Way connector itself is not present at the back of your 2000 Dodge Ram 3500 then there are a couple of ways you could add one. First, follow the wires at the back forward under the vehicle. They should plug into another connector that is rectangular. If they do then you could use # HM42190 to just plug into that rectangular connector.

Or you could verify the functions of the wires using a circuit tester such as #PTW2993 and then attach them by function to a vehicle side 7-Way such as # HM48480.

The brake controller that is connected to the factory harness is already circuit protected using the vehicle tow package wiring. And since it is using the factory harness it is properly grounded so provided that it is in good working order there isn't anything that you would have to do to the brake controller.
