Can Tire Pressure Be Lowered On Small Utility Trailer
Question:
Hello - I have a 4x6 utility trailer that has standard 4.80x12 bias ply tires. The sidewall says to inflate to 90 psi. I do not haul a lot of weight... 1000 lbs combined maximum. Unloaded, or even lightly-loaded, the trailer bounces violently on even small bumps. Im considering a slightly larger tire, such as this ST145R12. Since I carry only a little weight, usually 800-1000 lbs or less including the trailer, can this tire be run at a lower pressure for better compliance? What is safe? 50 psi? 45 psi? Thanks!

It is always recommended to inflate the tires on a trailer to the maximum pressure.
If you do not inflate the tire to its maximum, it reduces the amount of weight a tire can carry and if overloaded can cause the sidewalls of the tire to overheat and fail. If you over inflate the tires it will cause tread wear at the center of the tread and if under inflated it will wear the outside edges of the tire. It's always recommended to inflate the tires when they are cold.

If you are considering bigger tires and wheels you need to consider the added height to the trailer and you also want to make sure you have enough clearance for the larger tires.
