Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 1998 Dodge Ram Towing a Forest River R-Pod 179

Question:

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie SLT, 5.2L V8 with factory step bumper rated at 5000 lbs. I am buying a new Forest River R-Pod model 179 with a total unloaded weight of 2630 pounds. The tongue weight is 285 lbs. The dealer is adamant that I need this WDH system. I believe that is total overkill and I need a friction anti sway bar at most. Could I please get your professional opinion on this? Either case I plan to buy from you. Thanks and happy new year!

For a tongue weight of 285 the Pro Series Weight Distribution System part # 49570 that you referenced would be WAY overkill. Typically we recommend a WD system for setups where the trailer weighs more than half of the tow vehicle's towing capacity.

Since your trailer weighs more than half of the capacity when unloaded it would be safe to say a WD would be recommended.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

A system like the part # RP66540 would be a better choice that should work as long as your setups tongue weight falls in the 200 lbs - 600 lbs range.
